Volunteers and donations help to make Downtown Seguin special

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today

(Seguin) — Downtown Seguin benefited from the generosity of several groups recently with two place making projects. Thanks to a donation of a new bench and the installation of a new flower bed, downtown Seguin has become a little more welcoming and a little more special.

A new bench was installed earlier this month in front of the Seguin-Guadalupe County Heritage Museum on North River Street. The bench was a donation from the alumni of the Dowdy School, a former school in eastern Guadalupe County near the Darst Creek Oil Fields. The bench provides pedestrians and visitors to downtown a shaded seat to escape the heat and rain.

A large group of volunteers worked to improve a gateway into downtown with the installation of a new flower bed in the 200 block of West Court Street. The push to improve the eastern gateway into downtown grew from the concerns of a dedicated citizen who saw the potential in the block. That citizen, Douglas Manger, started a conversation with Main Street staff and started throwing around ideas and finding a project that worked within budget parameters and manpower.

The new bed is a reality thanks to a large group of people coming together to make it a reality. This includes Manger who helped coordinate the project and spent hours preparing the site. Liz Romero with the Master Gardeners helped design the bed and provided expertise on the best plantings. Main Street truly appreciates Maldonado Nursery, Landscape & Irrigation for their donation of the plants, soil and mulch that filled the new bed. Finally, the Boy Scouts of America Troop 317 under the leadership of Jerry McNulty worked the flower bed, planted the new plants and placed the water lines.

“Building downtown is a team effort that takes volunteers, businesses, government and nonprofits working together to continue the revitalization of downtown,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director, “We want to thank the Dowdy School Alumni, Douglas Manger, Liz Romero, Maldonado Nursery and Boy Scouts of America Troop 317 for being apart of the team supporting downtown.”

If you are interested in volunteering for Main Street, have an idea for a project in downtown or want to make a donation to Main Street/downtown Seguin, you are encouraged to contact Seguin Main Street at (830) 401-2448.
