An editorial by KWED/Seguin Daily News General Manager Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- It may have been a while since you were in a civics class, but we all remember those things we were taught. Those things that should constantly remind us why America is great. Chief among them is the Freedom of Speech that we all enjoy, and by extension, a Freedom of the Press. Those freedoms are the cornerstones of our democracy.

Those rights were threatened last week by a proposed deal that would have allowed the Seguin ISD -- a governmental entity, that exists solely based on your tax dollars -- to take over a commercial radio station. That was a highly unusual proposal, but what may have been more troubling is that it would have also allowed the government to take over the news content that you receive from Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin Daily News.

(Seguin) -- The Fourth of July is almost a full year away, but that's not stopping the city of Seguin from preparing to make next year's Independence Day weekend celebrations one of the best yet. Seguin Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones last week got approval from the Seguin City Council to again host the city's fireworks show on July 3.  The city moved the show up one day in 2016 after what was, by their own admission, a disappointing performance in 2015.  Jones says the city and the company that put on the show really rebounded this year with a spectacular performance.
