Well known play to be featured at MLK event; ''Fences'' set to delight local audiences at dinner theater

(Seguin) -- There's a well known saying that states that "good fences make good neighbors." The Seguin MLK Day Planning Committee is offering a new version of Robert Frost's words. The committee hopes that the play "Fences" will help to bring a community together.
 
The crowning jewel in this weekend's celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King is a dinner show Saturday night in the Seguin-Guadalupe County Coliseum. The play "Fences" by August Wilson will be presented thanks in part to the show's director Pat Hoppe. Hoppe says this is the same story that many saw at the movie theater, where Denzel Washington and Viola Davis played the title roles. The drama enjoyed wide critical acclaim, and Davis actually won the Oscar for her part in the film.

Seguin ISD to unveil draft document for its strategic plan

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is expected to get its first official glimpse at the district's future. Trustees on Wednesday will be meeting for a Team of 8 Training board workshop. During that training, the district's efforts in it's strategic planning process are expected to be shared by Consultant N2Learning.
 
The workshop session, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, in Oak Park Mall, is said to be the district's next big step in moving forward and adopting its 3 to 5 year strategic plan -- a plan that has been in the works since the beginning of this year and a plan initiated under the leadership of new School Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez.

SEDC board gets report on job, housing, retail growth; Hundreds of new homes expected in Seguin during 2018

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Board of Directors got some good news during its first meeting of 2018. SEDC Executive Director Josh Schneuker told the board more jobs are being created in Seguin and the housing market is expected to grow significantly very soon.

Schneuker's staff report during the meeting, held on Monday afternoon, featured a look United Alloy Inc., a company that recently set up shop in Seguin. He says the company is now up and running thanks to their successful recruitment efforts.

Community invited to check out city's new Utility Operations Center

(Seguin) -- The new year for the SEDC Board of Directors started with a new location for its monthly meetings. The SEDC board typically meets the first Monday of each month at the City Hall Annex Building on River Street. The board on Monday had a change of venue for the meeting, and it was moved out to the city's new Utilities Operation Center. The center is located on North Austin Street, north of Interstate 10.

TLU women open SCAC play with 0-2 road trip

(Shreveport, Sherman) – The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team struggled through the opening weekend of Southern Collegiate Athletic Confernce play, falling to Centenary 67-52 in Shreveport on Friday and to Austin College 93-42 on Sunday.

Junior guard Alex Cage led TLU with 20 points in Sunday’s road win over Austin College.  
 
(Shreveport, Sherman) – The Texas Lutheran men’s basketball team opened the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a 71-66 loss to Centenary in Shreveport, La. on Friday, but the Bulldogs bounced back to defeat Austin College 79-69 in Sherman on Sunday.
