City of Seguin to celebrate 176th birthday; Celebration includes ice cream contest
(Seguin) -- Happy birthday Seguin! The city with the help of the Seguin Conservation Society will be breaking out the cake and ice cream during its weekend birthday party at the Heritage Village located on Live Oak Street. The city this year turns 176 years old. The featured event of the Saturday night celebration will again be the annual homemade ice cream contest.
Seguin Mayor Don Keil signs a proclamation designating August 9, 2014 as a day of celebration and recognition of Seguin's 176th birthday. Those on hand for the signing include, left to right, Seguin Conservation Society board member Sharon Johnson, Seguin Conservation Society President Lou Ann Jackel and Seguin Conservation Society special event coordinator Carolyn Sagebiel. Carolyn Sagebiel, the conservation society's coordinator for special events, says the contest is open to anyone in the community.

"It is not too late to enter your ice cream. We do request that your ice cream be at the First Church, between 4:30 and 5 on Saturday afternoon, August the 9th because our judges are going to be judging the ice cream between 5 and 5:30 and the party really begins at 5:30," said Sagebiel.

Sagebiel says people can whip up any favorite recipe that they'd like. She says the only rule is that if eggs are used for custard -- they must be fully cooked. Other than that, she says the ultimate decision will be left up to the judges.

"We have four divisions. We have Best Pecan, Best Vanilla, a specialty like strawberry, peach or anything fruity and then, we're going to have The People's Choice. We'll have a separate table for that outside after people come in and taste the ice cream and they will choose the one they like," said Sagebiel.

This year's birthday celebration is also set to include a hamburger and hot dog dinner plus a full night of live entertainment. The Guadalupe County Sheriff's Posse is also set to ride in and will present a birthday proclamation to the residents of the city of Seguin. The birthday celebration gets underway at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Seguin's First Church located in the Heritage Village. Those wishing to participate in the homemade ice cream contest are also invited to contact Sagebiel at 830-305-2949.
