(Seguin) – Texas Lutheran University wants to help you get a jumpstart on your Halloween fun. Two events are scheduled tonight on campus. A Haunted House and the Boo Bash trick-or-treat events will both be held tonight.
The annual Haunted House hosted by the Mexican-American Student Organization (MASA). Group member Laura Torres says thanks to other campus programs, the group is able to transform the Moody Science Building into a real “thrill.”
"This year's theme is Freak Show kind of going along with the whole American Horror Story type of theme. So we're going to have stuff kind of like you would see if you went to a Freak Show -- like a fortune teller or just creepy things that happen. We are also wanting to use a lot of clowns in our haunted house because clowns are naturally creepy," said Torres.
Torres says thanks to the student volunteers, the groups are also able to support a local cause.
"The students do this because it's a good bonding event with our new members or with different student organizations on campus since we have one of the sororities, Sigma Delta Lambda and the fraternities helping, Omega Tau and it's really fun. But the overall bigger picture is that we all try -- through the haunted house -- to raise some canned foods for the Christian Cupboard," said Torres.
The second event is the annual Boo Bash at campus dorms. Tim Westmoreland, who helps to oversee the dorm halls, says kids in the community are invited to trick-or-treat beginning at 6:30 p.m.
"We decorate the halls and set it up so the kids can come trick-or-treat throughout the halls so the students here can give back to the community out there. It's been going on for years here. It's been pretty much a staple for what I'm being told. Last year, we had about 374 kids that came through and we gave out about $1,100 worth of candy. The students love it and the community loves it and we're really excited to put it on again," said Westmoreland.
There is no cost for the haunted house. However, donations of canned foods will be accepted in exchange for entry. The haunted house is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Both the haunted house and Boo Bash events will be held on the south end of the campus. The public is instructed to turn onto Fritz Street from West Court Street. The buildings hosting the events will be located on the right side.
