(Seguin) -- Whether it be lemon, chocolate or cherry -- the flavor of the pie doesn't matter for Seguin Mayor Don Keil who again has volunteered to take a pie in the face in exchange for donations today to Texas Lutheran University's Great Give campaign. The clock is officially ticking for today's virtual giving campaign which began at midnight.
The Great Give is a 24-hour online giving campaign that will involve the entire campus and community in supporting TLU. Organizers say The Great Give is an opportunity for TLU alumni, friends, students, faculty, staff and Seguin community to show support for the university.
Drumming up excitement will again be Mayor Keil who like last year, put his face at risk in exchange for online donations.
Keil says he will come eye to eye with a pie if and when 100 Seguin residents give during today's campaign.
"TLU is obviously one of the great parts of our city here. It's a big big part of our community. It's a big part of our economy and it's one of the great things that we can boast about when we're talking about Seguin. Very few towns of our size have a well respected, highly regarded, highly rated university in their midst. So I think we're very very proud to have TLU here and whatever I can do in any small way to help them along, I'm glad to do it, including getting a pie in the face," said Keil.
The Great Give was created to support all programs, students, faculty, and staff through The Texas Lutheran Fund. However, all gifts, regardless of designation will count toward participation in this campaign.
Keil says the most important donations will no doubt have to come from the community. He says even if people don't have close ties with the university, all they have to do is look at TLU and the impact that it has in our community.
"I’d hope that they would love to come out and help support this great institution. I think even though maybe you're new to the community, you don't understand TLU and what it means to be here in Seguin or maybe in the years past, you've always wanted to make a donation, but you never really gotten around to it -- it's so very easy to do it now, you go online to www.tlu.org
to I believe it's The Great Give and just put your credit card number in there and make a nice donation to TLU. It's very very easy. Anybody can do it and I encourage anybody in the area to get out and support this great local college," said Keil.
Other TLU personnel will also join Mayor Keil as they volunteer their faces during the "Pie in the Face Challenge." Each have set their own goals and incentives within their respective departments.
This year's overall goal is to have 1,000 people donate during the 24-hour period. Gifts of any size are welcome and will be accepted online at www.tlu.edu/greatgive
