(Seguin) -- Eating fruits and vegetables may just land your child's elementary school with $1,000 cash. HEB is inviting local elementary school students to take part in Saturday's “Eating Fresh. Growing Strong” contest.
Sean Hoffmann, public information officer for the Seguin ISD, says HEB is encouraging elementary school students to stop by and sample fresh fruits and veggies -- the same food products found at their school's salad bar. He says the school having the most students participate on Saturday will win the cash prize.
"It's kind of coming full circle and it's a chance for families to go and see what the new HEB has to offer. It's also an opportunity for our students to go take some fresh fruits and vegetables off the snack bar at the new HEB and create an opportunity for their schools to win up to a $1,000," said Hoffmann.
Hoffmann says the Seguin ISD appreciates its community partnership with the local grocery store. He says this weekend's contest is just one more way for HEB to help make a difference in the lives of local children and their families.
"We're ecstatic that HEB has reached out and offered this opportunity for our elementary schools and our elementary school students. As everybody knows, HEB is a great community partner not only in the state of Texas but in Seguin as well. HEB has always supported public education in the state of Texas with their teachers, school district of the year programs and principal of the year program. So we're not surprised to get the support from HEB, but we're certainly very happy to have this opportunity Saturday in which our elementary school students can visit the new HEB here in Seguin and participate -- get some goodies off the salad bar -- salad bars, ironically, which we have in our own schools now as of this past fall through a partnership with HEB," said Hoffmann.
Hoffmann says such partnerships just emphasize what the district works on yearlong to ensure health and wellness for its families.
"We are encouraging families to go with their elementary school aged children and again participate in the health and wellness activity. Folks like Pete Silvius here at Seguin ISD and our food service department have really been working hard the past several years to promote health and wellness among our students and among our families. We've seen what Pete has done with bicycling and with kayaking and that health and wellness component goes beyond that and goes to what we are eating in our diet and exercise. This is part of that program. Again, we couldn't be happier to have HEB supporting this and providing this chance for our families to go and see the new store and also get a check for our elementary schools," said Hoffmann.
Free sampling of the fruits and vegetables for local elementary school students will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The contest is open to each of the seven Seguin ISD elementary schools which include Jefferson, McQueeney, Koennecke, Patlan, Rodriguez, Weinert and Vogel. The second place school will earn $750 while the third place campus will win $500.
