(Seguin) -- A theater classic is looking for a few good cast members. Monday is the audition date for the upcoming theater production "Our Town" by American playwright Thornton Wilder.
Director Pat Hoppe says she's looking forward to piecing the production together at the Texas Theatre. She says it remains a very popular story.
"It's been called by several people, the best play ever written by an American play write. It's a classic. Children study it in school and of course, many theatres around the world do it. We did it in Seguin, actually many many years ago, probably 30 to 35 years ago. So it's time to bring this classic back on stage. The story is set in Grover's Corners, New Hampshire 1901 to 1913 and it's just a story of life and three acts. Act one has to do with just an every day life and a couple of families in the town. Act two is marriage and act three is death and dying. It's a wonderful show," said Hoppe.
Hoppe, who has several productions under her belt, says she is looking to secure a large cast.
"I need a stage manager that is the lead in the play. He talks to the audience. He tells the story and he gets everyone involved. There's a young girl and a young boy who fall in love and get married. So those people need to be I would say in the 18 to 22 range. Then there are two mothers, there are two fathers, then there are the town's people. There's also a choir. Then I also need, for people who would love to be on stage. Think they would like to try a show, but are a little intimidated by learning lines. I need people who have no lines or I need people who have just one or two lines. This is a bigger show than I normally cast. I've never had a cast of over 13. So this cast is about 27. I'm hoping that I get people. I would love to see as many people as possible come out," said Hoppe.
Hoppe says a pair of auditions have been scheduled beginning this weekend. She says taking part is easy.
"All you have to do in audition is come in and cold read. It's not a musical, so you don't have to sing, except if you want to be in the choir. There are a couple of church songs that are in the show. Let me also say that unlike the past two shows, this show has no bad words and no uncomfortable moments for the audience. It's a family show, anybody of any age can come and parents would not feel uncomfortable at all," said Hoppe.
With the upcoming auditions, Hoppe says she hopes to encourage new people to stop by and give it a try. She says this particular play is perfect for anyone who has an interest in community theater but who has never taken the stage.
"They want to see how a show is put together. If they want to see how rehearsals are like, this is a perfect opportunity for them. I would welcome people who would like to take this little taste and then go on from there," said Hoppe.
"Our Town" auditions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Texas Theatre. The show will be performed during the last two weekends in May. Those having questions prior to this weekend's auditions are asked to contact Hoppe at 830-491-1238.
