(Guadalupe County) -- The area's latest report of domestic violence has turned fatal. A woman died Tuesday after being stabbed multiple times by her boyfriend. Guadalupe County Sheriff's Investigator Wayne Lehman says the victim is identified as 28-year-old Monica Gallegos.
Lehman says the stabbing was reported around 1 a.m. Tuesday at a home located in the 18,000 block of State Highway 123 South.
"While our officers were in route out there, the caller advised 9-1-1 that her best friend was being stabbed by her best friend's boyfriend in the front yard. Our officers arrived on scene shortly there after. By the time the officers arrived, the suspect fled on foot to a business just up the road, just north of the location and he was subsequently found hiding in a dumpster," said Lehman.
Lehman says Gallegos was immediately airlifted to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), where she succumbed to her injuries early Tuesday afternoon.
Lehman says the woman's boyfriend 26-year-old Esteban Pinon was later found hiding in the dumpster of Smithey's Country Store.
Lehman says unfortunately, this was the ultimate fate for a couple who has had a history of domestic violence.
"There's been a history of family violence between Mr. Pinon and Ms. Gallegos. He was actually convicted of a family violence last fall involving her. He's just an extremely violent individual," said Gallegos.
Lehman says domestic violence can no longer be a crime that is ignored. He says these crimes must always be taken serious.
"This is one of those things where -- over the last I guess 10-15 years, we have really seriously been taking family violence situations seriously, because it is a serious crime. Even though the first offense may very well be just a Class A misdemeanor Family Violence, my experience working all these years in law enforcement, the violence just increases each and every single time. Unfortunately, with a case like this, I've worked way too many of these murder cases involving family members. The sad thing about it is most woman are killed by their paramour in violent situations. It's just one of those things that we just need to make folks aware of how important that is that you don't abuse your loved ones. This is just a clear cut example of how bad family violence can get. This is the ultimate -- as far as how bad it can get," said Lehman.
Pinon was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Those charges are expected to be upgraded Wednesday morning to murder. Pinon remains behind bars in the Guadalupe County Jail.
