(Seguin) -- Get ready to cheer on some of the fastest Chihuahuas in Texas. The Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the annual Chihuahua races, a featured event during its annual Fiestas Juan Seguin Celebration. The event scheduled for Saturday in downtown Seguin also includes music, vendors and arts and crafts.
Kathy Cameron, of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, says the one day festival is held each June in honor of the city’s namesake, Col N. Juan Seguin.
"We've always wanted to, of course, focus on the tradition and the heritage of the Hispanics and now with the namesake of Seguin, Juan Seguin and everything he contributed to our heritage. In the past, we were focusing on Cinco De Mayo and things like that. We wanted to just be able to celebrate Juan Seguin, our namesake of our city and again with our Hispanic heritage and bring the community together to celebrate that," said Cameron.
Cameron says to help attract folks to the downtown plaza, the chamber has successfully hosted the Chihuahua races. She says it's a great way for pets and their owners to have some fun.
"Of course, everybody loves Chihuahuas especially their owners. I think it's because it's such a family time. We actually do have bleachers. We try to make it a live racing atmosphere. We have different heats. It's just gotten bigger and bigger. We've actually had people call and tell us that they've been training their Chihuahuas to get ready for the big race. It's just always a lot of fun. It puts a smile on everybody's face. The owners get excited. They have cheering sections -- cheering on their favorite Chihuahua or participant," said Cameron.
The races will kick off with a pooch parade. The parade is open to all breeds and will begin at 4 p.m. Two Chihuahuas will also be crowned this year's King and Queen of Fiestas Juan Seguin.
Cameron says the annual Chihuahua races will then get underway at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday. Registration for all three events begins at 3 p.m.
"We ask that your Chihuahua (that) there is some partial Chihuahua breed, a mix in your dog to participate. We ask that as far as the requirements, the shots, whatever the city ordinance requires of your pets is what we require and then of course, they need to be on a leash. We do ask that we have two people per Chihuahua in the race being handlers. One at the finish line, one at the start, so that of course, they can keep up with their pet," said Cameron.
In addition to the pet activities and vendors, organizers and supporters say a big portion of the celebration is the music.
Bands will take the stage beginning at 6:30 p.m. This year's opening act is the Conjunto Cats. Also taking the stage that night will be Bobby G & Le’ Deuce and Krazy Pimpz. This year's headlining act will be Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers.
Gates on Saturday open at 3 p.m. Admission is $5 beginning at 5 p.m.
