(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is trying to reinvest some of its funds into the downtown area.  The city council recently approved this year's recipients of the city's FIX-IT Facade Grants.  The grants are part of a competitive process that's administered by the city's Main Street Program.
Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director, says they had lots of good grant applications this year.
"The FIX-IT Facade Program has been in existence for quite a few years now and it's been probably our most influential tool in getting a lot of buildings brought up to code, seeing a lot of projects happen. This year, we had about $36,000 to award. The majority of that funding coming from the hotel occupancy tax fund as well as two projects that did not come to fruition last year so that money will be reallocated this year. The main street advisory board met in January and recommended five grants," said Kramm.
The five grants cover some highly visible properties in the heart of downtown.  Kramm says all kinds of work is being proposed by the grant recipients.
" (They include) The Park Plaza Hotel for signage at 20 percent of project cost. Loan Star Home Solutions for some roof repairs and also replacing a watershed in the rear of the property that has been deteriorated at seven percent. At 106 west Court Street -- replacing the glass there with safety glass and some other fascade improvements as well at 45 percent. The Vivroux properties, that was a complete overhaul of the project of the facade of most of those buildings -- that will be a 25 percent cut of project costs and reimbursement grant and the last one would be for Court Street Coffee Shop for ADA access for that property and that would be about 40 percent project cost that the board recommended. All these grants are reimbursement grants and will not get the money until the project has been completed," said Kramm.
The city's grant total was only $36,735, but if all of the projects are completed, it will represent nearly  $170,000 worth of improvements in the downtown area.
