(Seguin) -- Expect to see plenty of big hitters in Seguin this weekend. Approximately 90 softball teams will be in town this weekend as the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce teams up with Huber Ranch to host the annual Nationals tournament. The tourney, which features select teams, begins today and runs through Sunday. Teams from across the state including several teams from Mexico will be among those participating.
Georgia Hester, membership and events coordinator for the chamber of commerce, says the group is excited about again welcoming the teams and making them feel at home.
"It's a new fundraiser. We started it last year. So that was the first time that we partnered with Huber Fields. We partnered with Johnny Guerrero there at the fields at Huber Ranch and it was more of a regional tournament. So we had a lot of teams. We had 28 teams last year participate and then this year, we decided to partner with him. Last year, it was in April. This year, we're doing it during the Fourth of July weekend. It's his normal Nationals, but with us partnering together, we can make it bigger. We are expecting 90 teams this year," said Hester.
Hester says the 90 teams will equate to thousands of visiting faces to Seguin. She says to help ensure a good visit, chamber volunteers will be stationed throughout the various complexes promoting the community.
"So there's going to be actually four locations to host 90 teams in four days. The chamber is going to be running the Four Plex Softball Complex. We'll be doing concessions and the gate and all that good stuff. So we've got lots of volunteers on hand to help with that. Then, there will be games at Huber Field as well. So then also we're playing at the San Marcos Gary Softball Complex. They'll just play there one day and then, we'll bring them all back to Seguin. So at one point, every team will come through our community. So we're just really excited. We're expecting about 4,000 people throughout the weekend. With everything else that's going on like Freedom Fiesta, we're able to send people to check out all the neat things that are going to be going on in our community that whole weekend. So when they have a break between games, we're encouraging them to shop in Seguin, to eat in Seguin and check out all of the things that we have going on," said Hester.
In the meantime, Hester ask that citizens do their part by welcoming the teams, dressing up business marquees with special messages or simply providing players and their families with guidance around town.
"Seguin's a great community and we just want to show them how great it is. We have a great little town here and there's just so much to offer. We want them to know -- the people who attend these tournaments -- they come back throughout the year to frequent Huber Fields as part of all kinds of tournaments that Johnny has going on. We want them to come into town and use the facilities and the restaurants and shop and eat and drink and play here. I think just for the community to be welcoming and inviting and be ready, there's going to be a lot of people around here. It's going to be fun," said Hester.
The Nationals Tourney kicks off with a team parade and team pin exchange at 6 p.m. tonight in Central Park. The public is encouraged to come out and help celebrate the game.
