(Seguin) -- Live in Seguin or outside of Bexar County and feel like heading into the big city to take advantage of tax-free shopping this weekend but don’t have reliable transportation or don’t feel like dealing with the traffic?

For this tax-free weekend, the Alamo Area Council of Governments offers residents in outlying counties in our region FREE rides to popular destinations that include the Forum and Rim Shopping Centers, Westover Marketplace and several malls – Ingram, South Park, North Star and Rolling Oaks.

What’s the catch? There is none. During this Friday and Saturday promotion, anyone – no questions asked – can take advantage of this free round-trip between designated pick-up/drop-off locations.

Rides will be offered from Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Pleasanton, Floresville, Hondo, Seguin, Devine, Bandera, New Braunfels and Boerne. There will be a set schedule and riders will be given three hours before getting picked up and given a ride back.

The program is managed by AACOG’s public transportation program, the Alamo Regional Transit or ART.

“We’re here to assist the people of our region,” said Tina Maloy, ART Outreach Specialist. “We’re offering this special service to provide folks in the rural areas a hassle-free option to top-notch shopping centers they may not have near them.”

The way it works is simple: Anyone wanting a ride calls into ART’s dispatch center at (866) 889-7433 and mentions tax-free weekend ride or online at

First come, first served. You’ll be asked to provide your name, how many riders in your party and your contact information (please mention if you’re bringing child seats for infants). That’s it – just show up at your nearest designated pickup/drop-off spots and times

“Let us take care of all the travel details so you can focus on shopping and having fun,” Maloy said. “Just make sure you get your ride scheduled, make it to the stop on time and we’ll take care of all the other worries like traffic and parking.”

The Alamo Regional Transit is a great low-cost public transportation program that helps Alamo Area residents get around AACOG’s 12-county region outside of Bexar County. It’s an on-demand, door-to-door service typically involving riders scheduling trips ahead of time. Service is offered 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost ranges from $2 for in-town rides to $12 for service two counties over, each way. ART also transports kids to/from school during the school year and to various activities during the breaks.
