(Seguin) -- A local flower shop hopes to Petal It Forward today by bringing smiles to those throughout the city. Dietz Flower Shop and Tuxedo Rental is setting out to again hit the streets in hopes of delivering a flower to as many as 1,000 individuals during today's national "Petal It Forward" campaign.
Jamie Lum, of Dietz Flower Shop, says with the help of their Happiness Ambassadors, the business will be handing out flowers at random to residents. She says the effort is being done in partnership with the Society of American Florists (SAF).
"It's just to bring a smile to everyone's faces, to let people know there are still good things in this world happening. With all the tragedies and things that our country including our community are facing on a day to day basis, it's just nice to be able to get out there, see our community, give them something special, give them the opportunity to do that for someone else and watch everybody just smile and kind of have that warm feeling of 'hey, people still care about people,'" said Lum.
Flowers will be given at random to people on the street. After receiving their flowers, the lucky Seguin residents will be asked to spread the happiness to others by gifting their extra flower, and sharing their happiness: an extra flower to share with a loved one, coworker or even a stranger and then posting it on social media using the hashtag #petalitforward.
Lum says they see the positive impact day in and day out when they make their flower deliveries. She says because people love to get flowers "just because," they wanted to give people a chance to do the same for someone else.
"It's just really a great time to share our love of flowers with the community. We love what we do and who doesn't love flowers?" said Lum.
The national mobilization of today's flower delivery reportedly goes hand in hand with science and research. That's according to the SAF, who after conducting a survey of 2,500 people throughout the U.S., believes that it has uncovered the impact of flowers on Americans. The results of those findings include that it is just as good to give flowers as it is to receive them and that just being around flowers, helps to improve a person's mood.
Dietz Flower Shop is among the 273 florists from 49 states and Canada who are joining today's SAF 'Petal it Forward' event.
