(Seguin) -- As we prepare to enter November and the season to be thankful, the Seguin Main Street Program wants to express its thankfulness for the small businesses that call downtown Seguin home. The small independent businesses that line our downtown sidewalks help to create Seguin's unique sense of place that is draw to visitors, new residents and new businesses.
To celebrate our local businesses, the Seguin Main Street Program, Seguin Economic Development Corporation, Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Seguin Chamber of Commerce are all partnering together to promote shopping local.
There are a variety of reasons to shop local as you prepare for the holiday season and throughout the year. Shopping local small businesses helps support your neighbors and your community.
To begin with, shopping local ensures the City of Seguin and Guadalupe County can continue to provide the needed services that keep the community running. Police, fire, parks and more are all funded through sales tax collections - when you shop local you help support new playground equipment or a new fire truck.
As mentioned earlier, local shops create a unique sense of place. Local shops offer one-of-kind items and unique experiences that make a visit to Seguin special.
Shopping local independent businesses keeps more money in your community - according to Independent We Stand, for every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. What happens when you spend that same $100 at a national chain? Only $43 stays in the community. And when shopping online, almost none of your money stays in the community.
Shopping local also encourages community as local retailers support local nonprofits at twice the rate of chains. For example, Gift & Gourmet does a Give Back Saturday once a month, Court Street Coffee Shop has hosted special fundraisers for the arts and there are numerous examples of this from small businesses across the city.
The 2017 Shop Local campaign officially launches November 1 at the Seguin Chamber's Membership Luncheon. Be on the lookout during November and December for other Shop Local events and promotions and follow Shop Seguin on Facebook and Instagram for more information.
