(Seguin) -- Veterans will continue to be saluted this weekend. Texas Lutheran University students are hosting the annual 5K Dash for Disabled Veterans. The run/walk event is scheduled for Saturday at Max Starcke Park East.
Morgan Klaser, director of Center for Servant Leadership at TLU, says this is the fifth year that TLU honor students will work to support local veterans.
"It's a fundraiser that's planned by our freshman honors, freshman experience course (FREX). So the students in that course, all throughout that semester, they learn about issues. They meet with the community partner, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter here in Seguin. They're able to raise money through planning and implementing this 5K. It started five years ago with the honors freshman experience class wanting to have a community element where the students were really active and engaged in a community need and trying to address that need. The DAV ended up being the community partner that they started partnering with back then. The goal was to really be a sustainable source of funding from year to year. So it's grown from that first starting time to what it is now," said Klaser.
Held in November, the event is an extension of this community's celebration of its heroes. Klaser says the 5K Dash illustrates the special friendship that has developed between TLU and local veterans.
"There's a ton of ways for folks to get involved with the event. We have, of course, runners and walkers that come. We have volunteers and veterans and folks from the community that support and cheer people on as they're running and walking. We've got the TLU pep band out there to help get everybody hyped up. So there is that community spirit going on throughout the morning and just everyone taking the time to celebrate our veterans and really reflect on that learning opportunity for the freshman and the course that they get to see -- from start to finish -- this event happen and throughout that time also have a relationship with the DAV," said Klaser.
Registration and check-in is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday at the big pavilion. The 5K Run/Walk will follow at 9 a.m. Cost is $22 in advance or $30 on the day of. Dogs are also invited to run/walk with their owners. Dog registration is $5 a pet. All registered dogs will also receive a bandana.
