(Seguin) -- The East Central High School Class of '98 will gather in Seguin this weekend to rally behind one of their classmates whose teenager was among the 26 people shot and killed in Sutherland Springs. A fundraiser event is being planned this Saturday for the family of 16-year-old Haley Krueger. Krueger, the daughter of Charlene Uhl, attended Barnes Middle School in Seguin prior to moving to La Vernia a couple of years ago.
Organizing the event is Charlene's close friend Shannon Harvey. Harvey says it's important for her friend to take comfort in knowing that she has people who love and support her.
"It's very important. She's (Charlene) a single mother of three surviving children and she also has a grandbaby. My class of '98 from East Central High School, we are basically the ones who are donating and putting this together. She's had a really hard life -- Charlene has. It seems like she can't get ahead, no matter what happens. Now, this is like a huge tragedy and I'm just trying to show her that even though all the evil that has happened, there's still a lot of good people out there -- a lot of those good people are in small communities. I just want to be there and try to help her as much as I can," said Harvey.
Harvey will open up her house for the fundraiser on Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. Harvey, who lives at the corner of East Kingsbury Street and State Highway 123 Bypass, says the fundraiser will feature chicken and sausage barbecue plates, hamburgers, a bake sale plus a special raffle.
"We're having a raffle, we're having a live band, we're having a bounce house for kids. We're hoping for a big turnout. As you mentioned, a lot of these other places benefits, they are being held by big organizations. With me just organizing this, I'm depending on a lot of donations from friends basically. We've got a lot of donations from friends. Now, we just need the people of Seguin and around Seguin to come out and support the families -- this family -- as they've done all the families. We got a lot of great prizes. We have Dallas Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day game tickets. We have a lot of Spurs tickets. We have a lot of high end prizes," said Harvey.
Raffle tickets are $20 each and can be purchased in advance by calling Harvey at 210-825-6606. The fundraiser site is located at 1339 E. Kingsbury St.
