(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin will kick off the holiday season with the help of its own hometown hero. Seguin Deputy Police Chief Bruce Ure has been selected to serve as the grand marshal for this year's Holiday Stroll Parade.
Seguin Mayor Don Keil says he chose Ure after hearing about his life-saving actions during the Las Vegas shooting last month.
"Bruce is a true home-town hero. Throughout the mass-shooting disaster in Las Vegas, he kept his cool and acted like the true public guardian he is. Risking his own life, he took it upon himself to usher others to safety, and then directly save the lives of 2 severely wounded victims. Heroes like Bruce are few and far between, and should be honored every way possible. Having him as parade grand marshal is just one small way we can show our recognition and sincere appreciation for this great home-town hero," said Keil.
Ure says he shares the recognition with the many others who also put their lives on the line during that tragic night.
"When the mayor asked me about being in the parade, I was absolutely shocked and honored at the same time, because there's so many people out there that did absolutely heroic acts that had no training. So what I did, I truly felt like it was the natural thing to do. So to be recognized by the mayor of your city, especially in this manner, was very humbling to me and it's an honor that I won't forget," said Ure.
Ure says he looks forward to officially welcoming the start of the city's holiday season with the rest of the community.
"I'll be in the horse and carriage, of course with the Mayor and Marty, his wife and my wife Valarie. We're going to have a great time waving. It's such a wonderful parade so to be honored like this at this particular event is really special to me. It's something that again, I won't forget," said Ure.
The parade rolls through downtown Seguin beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The parade kicks off two nights of holiday events in downtown Seguin. Immediately after the parade, the community is invited to gather in Central Park for the annual tree lighting.
The mayor will also announce the winners of the parade and the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Vendors, photos with Santa and Christmas music by the Seguin High School band will also be available. The event is free.
