(Seguin) -- Local artist Janice McCurry is giving everyone the opportunity to sign, seal and deliver an angel. McCurry, who for years served as a school counselor in the Navarro ISD, says her passion to help others has taken shape into a note card project -- a project called "Hearts of Love." The package of eight individually designed angels encompassing the words such as love, hope and faith are being sold with proceeds going to those still trying to rebuild following Hurricane Harvey.
"I've been painting and collecting angels for many years. They're my passion. I had painted eight different angels and had wanted to do something to help spread some love in today's world. After Hurricane Harvey hit and I felt all the devastation down in the Rockport area, I actually thought of turning these into note cards and that's exactly what I did. I made the angel note cards so that not only the receiver could be blessed by giving an angel, but the sender also. Then, I wanted to give the proceeds after my expenses to the people in Rockport," said McCurry.
McCurry says "Hearts of Love" she believes is a direct impact from her own personal time spent helping victims.
"I guess that comes from my counseling background. I was a counselor for 15 years out at Navarro. Then for the last month, I've been going down to Three Rivers and counseling with the children down there and many of the kids that I counsel with have been displaced. I just thought about all the things that I wanted to bring back into this world and that's where feeling and friendship and dreams and all my different themes came about was from working with kids, mostly," said McCurry.
McCurry says she hoping to see the cards utilized throughout the year for messages to first responders, nursing home employees and others who dedicate their lives to others. She says each card is specifically crafted to lift the spirits of others.
"I totally believe in little miracles and I was actually at my church and a lady stopped there and joined our mission committee. She just happened to have started a 5013(c) company in the Rockport area. She has got it so well organized now that when you donate to them, it goes directly into the hands of the families, the elderly, the people who need it most. I'm going down there in a couple of weeks to visit and see how they line up their money to fit with the people that are in need the most. So I was very excited about that," said McCurry.
The package of the "Hearts of Love" notecards is $15 and will be available for sale during Saturday's Christmas Tree Festival scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church Seguin. The church is located at the corner of King and Walnut Streets. The notecards will also be sold throughout the month of December at Gift & Gourmet.
