(Seguin) -- The city is preparing to host its largest ever Lighted Holiday Stroll Parade in Downtown Seguin. That's according to Chandra Jobb, the recreation superintendent for the city's parks and recreation department. Jobb says the city is overwhelmed by the number of float entries and is thrilled to have so many groups, churches and local businesses participate.

"You can tell that it's a parade that has just grown in popularity due to the fact that we have a record number of entries this year. We have 78. We've never had that many entries for the Holiday Stroll Parade. So we are ecstatic about that," said Jobb.

Jobb says the parade is the official welcome of the holiday season for Seguin. She says in addition to the parade, the city tonight will welcome new additional lighting plus a host of other family fun.

"This is what kicks off the season. So everyone gets excited about getting to see all of the lights that are on all of the floats. All of the floats have to be lit. That's one of the requirements and so getting to see how they decorated for the holidays and then after the parade, getting to see the lighting of Central Park. This year, the city of Seguin Electric Department added 10,000 lights in Central Park. So, I can't wait to see that effect when the mayor does the countdown for the lighting of Central Park. We've got nine non-profit vendors that are going to be there that night selling everything from hamburgers, popcorn, hot chocolate, sausage on a stick. There's a bunch (of items). So I'm very excited about that," said Jobb.

The winners of the parade and the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest will also be announced just prior to flipping the switch for holiday lighting around Central Park. There is a total of 17 Christmas trees participating in this year's contest. Photos with Santa will also be available in the downtown gazebo.

Serving as this year's parade marshal will be Seguin Police Deputy Chief Bruce Ure. Seguin Mayor Don Keil chose Ure after having saved lives during last month's Las Vegas shooting. Risking his own life, Keil says Ure took it upon himself to usher others to safety, and then directly save the lives of two severely wounded victims.

The parade begins today at 6:30 p.m. The route begins on College Street and will head south on Austin Street to Central Park.

The parade marks day one of the city's three day Holiday Stroll schedule. Festivities, including the annual Sip 'n Stroll featuring over 25 chocolatiers, will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Live entertainment, a nativity petting zoo and snow will also be available in the park. Other weekend holiday events include the third annual Jingle Bell 5K Run at Max Starcke Park on Saturday morning followed by the annual North Pole Stroll from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Seguin.
