(Guadalupe County) -- Law enforcement officials are applauding the Amber Alert for helping to spot and lead San Antonio Police to Guadalupe County for a man accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife Sunday morning.
Lt. Craig Jones, of the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, says "the sheriff's office located a vehicle being sought in an Amber Alert." He says deputies were tipped off by a business owner on Highway 123 that the suspect vehicle in the Amber Alert was seen traveling northbound on Highway 123 in Guadalupe County.
Jones says the suspect's vehicle drove from Highway 123 -- just north of Geronimo -- to FM 1339 where he pulled over. However, before any law enforcement officials had a chance to make direct contact with him, the driver, identified as Richard Concepcion, 37, of San Antonio, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Concepcion was taken to an area hospital by San Marcos EMS where he later died.
Jones says SA PD had been searching for Concepcion after shooting his wife at her doorstep and then fleeing with their 18-month old child from their San Antonio home. Jones says his son was found sitting in the backseat of the pick-up truck.
"The child did not sustain any apparent injury and was transported to the San Antonio Police Department who assisted in reuniting the child with other family members," said Jones.
According to SA Police, dispatchers had received a call to assist a custody exchange between Concepcion and the boy's mother at around 8 o clock in the morning.
A few minutes later, officials say dispatchers took a second call that shots had been fired at the home.
When officers arrived, they found the woman dead outside her home. There reportedly had been a short history of domestic violence between the couple. Concepcion also reportedly had just filed for divorce in October. The investigation is being handled by the SA PD and Texas Rangers.
