(Seguin) -- Residents who want to gain a better understanding of the Seguin Police Department will soon have the opportunity. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2018 SPD Citizens Police Academy.

The annual ten-week academy starts Thursday, March 29th at 6 p.m. in the training room on the first floor of the Seguin Police Department. Each class will run approximately three hours. The last class night will be May 31st and the graduation is scheduled for the first week of June.

Carlos Contreras, public information officer and crime prevention officer for the Seguin Police Department, says the academy will teach citizens how police officers, telecommunication staff and support personnel protect citizens and prevent crime. Students will interact with the Chief of Police, patrol officers, narcotics investigators, detectives, telecommunication staff and K-9 units.

"They get to volunteer and help us out in day to day activities that we may need or may have, but for the citizens police academy, it's a great opportunity for our citizens in the city of Seguin just to see a behind the scenes aspect of the police department --- not only that but having the opportunity to see what every division within the police department does on a daily basis, how it operates -- not only that but also put a face or maybe build a relationship between any officer that's in the police department and the citizens that are joining the academy," said Contreras.

Police personnel will also provide instruction in ethics, communications, narcotics, officer safety, patrol, traffic stops, DWI, use of force, handcuffing, building searches and SWAT activities.

A tour of the Juvenile Probation Center and the Guadalupe County Jail will take place during the academy. The final class will include a trip to the SPD training facility (firearm range), providing students with an opportunity to learn gun safety as well as the basics of firing weapons.

Citizens will also have an opportunity to ride-along with a patrol officer for a minimum of two times during the academy session. Upon completion of all classes, students will participate in a graduation ceremony and will be awarded certificates. This academy is completely free and citizens will be provided a 2018 SPD Citizens Police Academy shirt.

Applications are available at the Police Department and on the police department webpage of the City of Seguin website. Those applications are due no later than March 16th. All applicants will undergo a background check prior to the start of class. Applicants may not be high school students and must be older than 18.
