|(Seguin) -- Local first responders are preparing to ignite the stage during this year's annual Guadalupe County Bras for a Cause fundraiser. The first responders will be strutting their stuff or in this case -- a specially designed bra benefiting the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation's Cancer Assistance Fund. The fundraising event is scheduled for Thursday at the Seguin Coliseum.|
JoAnn Maples, the chairperson for the GC Bras For a Cause committee, says in addition to supporting the models on the runway -- each ticket offers a night of dinner, music, wine and margaritas.
"Bras for a Cause is a fun elegant event that is more for a woman's night out. Although, we have had men attend our event, but it's more for women. We have 10 elaborately decorated bras that our local first responders get up on a runway stage, model them and then they are auctioned off. We've got more fire fighters or first responders wanting to do it than we have bras," said Maples.
Elaine Bennett, the executive director for the foundation, says she appreciates the committee's support and its contribution to its cancer assistance fund. She says even while their off duty, these first responders still come to the rescue of local patients.
"The cancer assistance fund is a fund that we have that allows patients that have cancer diagnoses and that are underfunded or unfunded -- we provide funds for those treatments to be administered. So as you know, GRMC does not turn any patient away. In the case that you do come up with cancer and you have that diagnoses, it's very devastating. We have a staff that is committed to treating every patient individually. So in the case of the cancer assistance fund, we are able to tap into those funds when needed," said Bennett.
Maples says she too is appreciative to those who have walked the runway for a good cause.
"Our local first responders were going over to New Braunfels doing that and I asked a couple of them 'why are you going to New Braunfels? Why don't we do it here?' They said, 'we don't have one here.' I said 'that's going to change.' So one started up, so like I said, this is our fourth year," said Maples.
Bras For A Cause will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased in advance at Keepers Interiors.
