(Seguin) -- It's Texas Independence Day. The city of Seguin today is invited to raise a glass of spring water in a Toast to Texas. The annual event held on the steps of the historic Sebastopol House is hosted by the Abishai Mercer Dickson, chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the city of Seguin.

Texas Independence Day is a celebration of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. With this document signed by 59 people who met at Washington-on-the Brazos, settlers in Mexican Texas officially broke from Mexico creating the Republic of Texas.

The annual tradition is held to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved and maintained the Independence of Texas.

Events get underway at 1:30 p.m. today with an actual toast to Texas at 2 p.m. It will be followed by the ringing of area church bells. A proclamation observing the historic day will also be delivered by the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Mounted Posse.

The Sebastopol House is located at 704 Zorn St.
