(Seguin) -- The success behind the 2018 Guadalupe County Bras for A Cause event has caused the local committee to lend a hand in assisting cancer patients not only today but in the years to come. Local members of the Bras for a Cause committee recently handed the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation's Cancer Assistance Fund a check for $40,000. The money was raised during this year's fundraiser which featured the auction of creatively designed bras. Each bra was modeled on stage and down the red carpet by local first responders. Strutting their stuff or in this case the designed bras have helped to again raise the money that will now go to support others fighting cancer.

GRMF Executive Director Elaine Bennett says the foundation is grateful for the group's generosity.

"It's beyond words because I am so grateful and with this committee, it's in its fourth year but this year, they decided to create an endowment which that's like a legacy gift so that is so important. Not that the others weren't but because all of the money does go towards the community members that come into our hospital and receive care -- that are either underfunded or underinsured so it really reaches a lot of people and it's not just breast cancer, it's all types of cancer so we are very grateful," said Bennett.

Bennett explains how the endowment will allow this gift to keep on giving -- benefiting even more people.

"An endowment is something -- in lay terms -- like a fund that is set aside to grow and what you use off of that -- that fund is the interest. So in essence when people donate to that endowment fund they are going to create that base which then will create more interest and that interest then will be given back to the hospital for the expenses that are going to be incurred for those patients. So really and truly, this is like I said a legacy gift and this is something that is going to be here forever," said Bennett.

Committee member Sydney Miller says over the last four years, the groups has donated over $130,000 to the foundation. Miller says as part of the founding membership, it is overwhelming to know what they are doing for someone else.

"Forty thousand is a lot but in the big scheme of things, it is a very small chunk of what we are doing for somebody for the amount of money that needs to be provided to the underinsured or not insured cancer patients but at least we feel like we are doing something for our community," said Miller.

Shannon Billings, is not only a committee member but continues to hit the runway representing the Seguin Professional Firefighters Association. Billings says he's excited to see the effort grow and is glad that others have also joined in on the effort.

"It is exciting to see our little organization grow up to a big organization to where we are now. After four years, we've gone from little to a lot and we're making a huge statement here in Seguin and making a big difference for a lot of people. I've got guys that beg to do this every year and once they are at the deal, and they see how it is going and after the event, that's all they talk about and that's all they talk about for the whole year. These guys are ecstatic. I mean I've got guys from New Braunfels and Houston and these guys are just always volunteering to be here and help out as much as they can," said Billings.

The foundation is the 501c3, which is the non-profit part of the hospital. All money raised goes toward helping cancer patients who are uninsured or underinsured receive charity infused chemotherapy treatments at GRMC.

Donations will be collected year round for the endowment. Those wishing to donate may call (830) 401-1385 or email foundation@grmedcenter.com.
