(Seguin) -- Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin Daily News are doing their part this week to help cover the remaining costs needed for the Matador Band's trip next month to Carnegie Hall in New York City.
In hopes of the band reaching its fast approaching and crucial goal, KWED today is launching its Five Days of Giving Campaign thanks to the help of various business and bank locations who have all committed to accept donations. The band is just a couple of weeks away from needing to secure its funds so the urgency to pull together those funds is vital. The band has only had five months to plan for this trip -- a trip invitation awarded to the program in October.
Tammy Bargfrede, band booster trip coordinator, says the band is still in need of approximately $20,000 for those additional costs over and above the booster budget.
"The amount of funds we need to raise are about $20,000 or just a little over $20,000. These are funds for incidentals that are over and above the cost of the actual trip. Each student is responsible for paying for their own trip, but their luggage cost -- that were not included in the initial price, there are some meals that were not included in the initial price and we'd love to have those funds that we could help these students out, rather than having them to come up with another additional two to three to $400 on top of what they've already paid for the trip," said Bargfrede.
Bargfrede says the band program realizes that many have already stepped up to help the 120 band students who individually had to raise $1,750. She says these additional funds raised this week will go to support the needs for the entire band. In addition to meal and luggage costs, the band needs $2,000 to help cover the band instrument and equipment travel.
Bargfrede says all donations and sponsorships are appreciated. She says individuals plus big and small businesses are welcome to show their support anyway they can. She says no donation is too small.
"Any amount is going to be helpful and it will all add up. If we only had 200 people who were willing to give $100, we would reach our goal. That's only $200 people in our community. If we had 800 people in our community give $25, we would reach our goal of $20,000," said Bargfrede.
The band in March will be headed to New York to perform during its Spring Break. Bargfrede says this is not only an educational experience but a once in a lifetime opportunity.
"What we're asking the community to do is to come out and support these students. These students work hard all year long. The band program is a successful program for the Seguin ISD. (Not) every band gets the opportunity go to New York and play at Carnegie Hall. They are invited based on the reputation of the band director and the program itself. It's an amazing experience just performing at Carnegie Hall. We're asking the community to come out and support them financially. If you were a previous band student or if you had a band student or you're a parent of a band student or if you just want to help support some really good kids who are working really hard to earn their money to go on this trip, we would appreciate all the help we can get," said Bargfrede.
The Five Days of Giving for the SHS Band begins today and runs through Friday. KWED each day will announce the daily collection for the campaign. Monetary donations can be made at Seguin Radio KWED, First Commercial Bank, First United Bank, First National Bank of Beeville and Gift & Gourmet. Sponsorship checks can also be made by contacting Bargfrede at 830-560-0032.
