(Seguin) -- Cupids shouldn't worry too much if they find themselves empty handed this hour. At least that's according to a local flower shop who believes in staying one step ahead in making sure that everyone gets those flowers and special gifts on Valentine's Day.
Jamie Lum, of Dietz Flower Shop, says there really isn't anything to worry about.
"I would just simply say to them, we have you covered. Valentine's Day gifts are readily available to pick up or have delivered throughout the day," said Lum.
Lum says today is indeed one of the busiest days of the year for the floral industry. She says making sure you are covered takes months of planning.
"For Valentine's, we start gearing up in the middle of the fall around October and then it continues all the way up until Valentine's Day. You start prepping with ordering of the vases, the flowers -- ahead a time with the growers and the wholesalers to make sure that the quantity you are needing are going to be available and that's no easy task because you have to decide what are you going to create? What are you going to be able to showcase and have to sell for Valentine's so you've got to start putting those things in your mind because you want to be able to have the right amount of those flowers to be here on Valentine's Day," said Lum.
Lum says when it comes to surprising someone with that perfect gift, you can never go wrong with flowers and maybe a little something extra.
"While people are still really passionate about roses and having those delivered, they are also adding other items such as jewelry -- necklaces or bracelets. They are also adding boxes of chocolates, balloons, stuffed animals such as bears. We've even seen an influx of people wanting to have little bags of pecans with their orders saying 'We're nuts about you or I'm nuts about you.' So we are seeing a lot of different gift items go out and this year especially," said Lum.
Despite changes in gift giving, Lum says there will always be that one constant when it comes to Valentine's Day.
"They are still the top seller. Red equals romance and everybody loves romance so the red roses, the Freedom Roses, those are the most popular. I think that's going to be a long standing thing forever. I don't think that will ever change really," said Lum.
Flower shops are not the only ones who will be busy today. Local retailers have also been feeling the added pressure to stock those special gifts.
Although some stores will remain open just a bit longer today, they won't be able to guarantee that all items will be in stock so customers are asked to stop by a flower shop or store and secure their gifts as soon as possible.
