-- Local first responders will be turning to you for some rescue tonight as
they prepare to ignite the stage during this year's annual Guadalupe County
Bras For A Cause benefiting the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation's Cancer
Assistance Fund. The fundraising event is set for tonight at the Seguin
Kay Martin, a GC Bras For a Cause board member, says the local non-profit group will again team up with the Seguin Professional Firefighters Association as its members auction off "elaborately and uniquely designed decorated bras" that have been sponsored by local groups and businesses.
"Well it's a fun filled night. It's pretty elegant really. It's decorated really nicely. We have heavy hors d'oeuvres and then any drink you would like. This year, we're going to have a special signature drink. Its got a funny name and you'll see it when you get there. Then we have dinner and then we have an actual fashion show. Seguin first responders come and actually model these decorated bras that are sponsored by different businesses in town and it's really fun to see them, because they're decorated really elaborately. Each fire fighter or first responder has the music that they've picked and they do like this fun dance. It's on a runway, so it's kind of like a fashion show and it's just absolutely hilarious. We have the best time. It's so fun. It's a great way to raise money, but have a good time too," said Martin.
Emilie Bailey, the executive director of the medical foundation's cancer assistance fund, also serves as a volunteer for the organization. Bailey says the money raised for the foundation helps to bring some piece of mind to those families who need it.
"Well we've been the benefactor since year one. This money goes to our cancer assistance fund which was created in 2012 by a bequest of a friend from the foundation. Over the past two years, this group of amazing volunteers has been able to give us about $50,000 to put towards that fund which helps fund charity -- patients that qualify for charity cancer infusion therapy at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. It also helps the hospital cover expenses, like lab work, imaging and all those other things that go along with cancer treatment plan. These funds help anybody that qualifies with any kind of cancer, no matter what it is," said Bailey.
Jennifer Schulze, another Bras for a Cause board member, says the event was a huge success last year and no doubt exceeded the group's expectations. She says the group, even in its first year, outgrew its location at the K.C. Hall -- forcing it to move the event to the Coliseum.
"We were very surprised. Our goal I think when we started this two, three years ago -- we were hoping our first year, we could give $5,000 and we were able to give $20,000 that first year. So I think we were absolutely blown away by how the community has taken to this event and gotten on board with us," said Schulze.
Today's event, which will also include a silent auction, will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Coliseum. Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased in advance at Keepers Interiors. Table sponsors are also still available.
