(Seguin) -- You're invited to take a sneak peek into the day and nightlife of a Seguin Police Officer. Applications are currently being accepted for the Seguin Police Department's Citizens Police Academy.
Carlos Contreras, public information officer and crime prevention specialist, says for 10 consecutive Thursdays, members of the community can get an inside look into what it takes to serve and protect the city of Seguin.
"Citizens that attend the academy will be taught on how police officers, telecommunications staff, support personnel -- how we protect and prevent crime for the city of Seguin. The students will interact with the chief of police, patrol officers, narcotic officers, detectives, telecommunications staff, our canine unit. We'll also be able to provide as a police department -- provide instruction to the students on ethics, communications, narcotics, officer safety, patrol tactics, traffic stops, DWI investigations, the use of force, handcuffing and possibly building searches too as well. They'll get a chance to also meet the Guadalupe County SWAT Team members and how they perform on a daily basis whenever they are called out," said Contreras.
Contreras says the program even includes a couple of field trips.
"During the academy, they'll also get a chance to take a tour of the Guadalupe County Juvenile Detention Center and the Guadalupe County Jail as well. At the very end -- like the cherry on the top basically -- the citizens will also get a chance to go our firing range which is our training facility and they'll get a chance to learn about gun safety, learn about different tactics on what we use or what we do as far as firearms training and things like that," said Contreras.
Contreras says the class is limited so citizens are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. He says all it takes is an interest in what they do.
"Whenever we start our first day of instruction, the introduction of the police department and things as such to the citizens, the first question that is asked is what caught your eye about the police department that made you join the Citizens Police Academy? The main common denominator is the interest -- them wanting to see behind the scenes. It's one of those things where it is the perfect opportunity for any citizen that would like to join the citizens police academy -- to get a chance to actually experience -- not very many people can say they've walked through the hallways of the police department -- seeing where everything is at, seeing how and why we do the things that we do. I would say that if you are interested, why not join? It's a perfect opportunity to not only learn and get to know the police officers but it's also an opportunity for the police officers and the police department as a whole to get to know you as a community member," said Contreras.
Contreras says applicants will have to undergo a background check prior to the start of class and must submit their applications by Tuesday, March 14th.
"The academy class will meet every Thursday at 6 p.m. Classes will range from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. or 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. depending on what is being taught that day but the academy dates are going to be March 30th all the way through May 25th and the last week June 1st will be a graduation day," said Contreras.

Applications can be picked up at the Seguin Police Department or via the city's website at
