(New Braunfels) – The Seguin High School softball team won its first two games of the 2017 season on Thursday at the New Braunfels-Canyon tournament, but closed the event with four straight losses over the course of Friday and Saturday.
The Matadors hammered San Antonio-Churchill 13-1 and took care of Del Valle 7-4 on Thursday. Seguin’s bats cooled off on Friday in shutout losses to Cedar Park-Vista Ridge (2-0) and Canyon (4-0). The Mats concluded the tournament Saturday with a 5-1 setback to Edinburg-Vela and a 7-1 loss to Santa Gertrudis.
In Friday’s win over Churchill, senior catcher and 2016 All-District selection Whitney Wendell picked up where she left off a year ago, going 2-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Shyann Atchley went 3-4, scored four times, and drove in two. Kylee Osborne recorded two hits, three runs, and one RBI, while Sandy Hernandez drove in four runs in a 2-2 performance. Skylar Loftin and Tate Smith each recorded an RBI as well. Vanessa Garza went 3-4 and earned the complete-game win in the pitcher’s circle, tossing a five-inning four-hitter with three strikeouts and a walk.
Wendel and Atchley each drove in two runs in the win over Del Valle. Presley Pence went 2-2 with a run and an RBI. Garza and Osborne drove in a run apiece, and Garza scored twice. Osborne was the winning pitcher after a three-inning, five-hit performance. All four of Del Valle’s runs in the third inning were unearned. Garza pitched two scoreless relief innings.
Pence went 2-3 and scored Seguin’s only run in the Saturday loss to Edinburg-Vela. Garza drove in Trinity Cash for the Matadors’ only run in the setback to Santa Gertrudis.
The Matadors (2-4) compete in the East Central – Judson tournament this Thursday through Saturday.
