The Texas Lutheran men’s basketball seniors were recognized on Senior Night before the Bulldogs’ regular season finale on Friday.
TLU men rally past Southwestern 95-89, settle for No. 3 seed in SCAC tourney
(Seguin) – Texas Lutheran seniors Zach Behr and Sterling Holmes keyed a second-half comeback for the Bulldogs in a 95-89 home win Friday night over Southwestern.
Trailing by 10 points with 14:06 to play, the Bulldogs went on a 27-11 run. Behr nailed a pair of threes and scored 13 in the rally. Holmes also hit a pair of three-points and scored eight in the run.
Michael Sullivan capped the run with a three-pointer at the 8:11 mark to give TLU its biggest lead of the night, a nine-point advantage.
Southwestern didn't go away. The Pirates took leads at 81-80 and 83-82 before TLU established a little bit of control down the stretch.
Alex Cage drained a three-pointer and then added two free throws to put TLU up three, 87-84, with 1:42 remaining.
The Bulldogs made 10 free throws in the final 1:42 to keep the Pirates at four and five-point deficits.
Behr led all scorers with 26 points. He added six rebounds and four assists. Holmes contributed 22 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.
Cage and Jordan Kouremetis also hit double-figures. Cage scored 14 and hit all four of his three-point shots, and Kouremetis chipped in 11.
Ryan Ogden led Southwestern with 25 points and eight rebounds.
TLU needed Schreiner or Colorado College to lose on Saturday to move up into the top two of the final SCAC standings, but the Mountaineers and Tigers both won to claim first and second place, respectively. The Bulldogs (16-9, 10-4 SCAC) will open the SCAC tournament in Friday’s quarterfinals as the No. 3 seed, and face No. 6 seed Centenary at 7 p.m.
The SCAC Tournament will be contested at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
Members of the winningest senior class in TLU women’s basketball history were honored during Senior Night festivities on Friday at Jim Shuler Court in Memorial Gymnasium.
TLU women rout Southwestern, head into SCAC tourney as No. 2 seed
(Seguin) – Texas Lutheran's eight women's basketball seniors all contributed as the Bulldogs handled Southwestern 71-51 Friday night to secure the team's 20th win of the year.
On TLU's Jim Shuler Court in Memorial Gymnasium, TLU moved to 20-5 overall and to 12-2 in the SCAC with the win.
The Bulldogs finished second in the final SCAC regular season standings, one game back of regular season champ Trinity.
The Bulldogs, already assured of at least the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament, were determined not to let Senior Night end with a loss. The Bulldogs opened a 32-11 lead at the end of the third quarter and never looked back.
TLU led 45-22 at the break and by as many as 26 in the fourth quarter.
Senior forward Kristen Lye led the Bulldogs with 18 points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes of action. She hit seven of her 13 shots.
Fellow senior Cierra Jordan chipped in 11 points, four steals and two rebounds. Senior forward Savannah Hight dished out five assists, scored six and had four rebounds and two steals.
Senior post Caitlin Rendon pulled down eight rebounds and blocked three shots, and senior point guard Bailey Champion scored eight and added two steals and two assists.
Senior guard Sarah Flournoy produced five points off the bench, and senior forward Caitlin Cote recorded six rebounds. Tiffany Dziuk, a senior forward, collected three rebounds.
TLU held Southwestern to 29.4 percent shooting in the first quarter and to 35.6 percent for the game.
The Bulldogs play in Saturday’s 2 p.m. SCAC semifinal against the winner of Friday’s Austin College – Dallas quarterfinal. The SCAC tournament will be played at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
