(Buda) – After a one-year hiatus, the Seguin boys basketball team makes a return trip to the UIL playoffs tonight in a 5A bi-district matchup with Austin-Lanier at Hays High School in Buda.
The Matadors, making their third playoff appearance in Dwayne Gerlich’s nine years as head coach, enter the Region IV bracket as the No. 2 seed from District 26-5A after posting a 10-4 district mark and a 16-13 overall record during the regular season.
Lanier, coached by Joseph Pendell, went 8-4 to finish third in District 25-5A notched an overall mark of 16-15 in regular season play.
The Vikings’ top individual player is senior guard Davion Buster, a 2016 Statesman All-Central Texas selection last year who surpassed 2,000 career points earlier this season, and is averaging 27 points per game. His backcourt mate Keondre Spencer averages 23 points per outing.
Seguin hopes to control the paint on both ends of the court with its imposing senior front-court due of 6’4” post Cedric Ward and 6’6” forward Jay Sayles.
Ward leads Seguin offensively with a 15.5 scoring average on 57 percent shooting, and also averages 8.9 rebounds per game. Sayles contributes 9.5 points per outing, but impacts games with his athleticism in a variety of other ways. He leads the Matadors in rebounding (9.4), blocked shots (3.4) and steals (1.9).
Seguin’s top perimeter players include senior shooting guard Tyler Fricke (11.7 points, .375 3FG), senior wing Xavier Bateman (9.1 points, 1.6 steals, .415 3FG), and senior point guard Mark Garcia (5.6 poings, 3.9 assists).
The last playoff win for the Seguin boys program was in 2005, when the Matadors edged Converse-Judson 43-40 in the 5A bi-district round.
Tonight’s opening tip at Hays is slated for 6 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580 AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage at 5:50.
