(Seguin) – The Navarro softball team won four games and dropped two to open the 2017 season last Thursday – Saturday during the Panthers’ annual home tournament at Huber Ranch in Seguin. Marion also participated in the tournament, notching one win, four losses, and a tie in a game that ended due to the time limit.
Navarro doubled up Devine 4-2 on Thursday. The Panthers played three games Friday, falling to Eagle Pass 8-4 and Pearsall 3-1 before capping the day with a 5-0 blanking of Jourdanton. Navarro closed the tournament Saturday with a pair of victories, 1-0 over Brackenridge and 11-4 over Marion.
Cayli Cowan, the Panthers senior pitching ace, started her season with a dominant weekend in tournament play. She went 3-1 with a 1.17 ERA, 52 strikeouts and eight walks while giving up 11 hits in 24 innings of work.
Alexis Valdez and Alyssa Hernandez each drove in four runs during the tournament, with Hernandez hitting Navarro’s first home run of the season. Cowan, Bailee Stanzione, Katie Rickets, Lindsey Gresham, and Stephanie Shannon each added two RBIs, while Emily Hinklemann and Sydnie Booker each drove in a run. Hernandez, Gresham, and Jaylyn Rodriguez scored four runs apiece, and Ricketts crossed the plate three times. Hernandez, Valdez, and Cowan each recorded eight hits, with Hernandez batting .533, Valdez, .500, and Cowan .471.
The Panthers pounded out 11 doubles in six games, with two apiece from Hernandez, Cowan, and Booker.
Marion fell to Pearsall 15-2 and Center Point 11-3 on Thursday. The Bulldogs finished in a time-limit tie with Brackenridge, 9-9, and defeated KIPP Academy 15-2 on Friday before dropping Saturday’s games to Devine 12-0 and Navarro 11-4.
Alexis Long went 2-2 with two runs and an RBI against Brackenridge, and Toryn Autry drove in two runs while scoring once. Ashley Laubach and Veronica Gonzales each drove in a run. The win over KIPP Academy saw Laubach deliver four RBIs and two runs scored. Long went 2-2, scored three times, and drove in one. Autry and Kyleigh Mulanax each had two RBIs. Autry earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in three innings.
Navarro was scheduled to visit Runge on Tuesday night, but no final was available at press time. Marion competes in the Jourdanton Tournament this Thursday – Saturday.
