(Cuero) - The Marion girls basketball program is headed to the Region IV tournament for the sixth time in seven years and the seventh time in Kollyn McWhinney's 13 seasons as head coach after outlasting Palacios 52-50 in double overtime Tuesday night in the 3A regional quarterfinals in Cuero.
Brianna Randle poured in a season-high 27 points to lead the Bulldogs offensively, and Madelyn Abrameit added 18 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
The Bulldogs edged the Sharks 6-4 in the second overtime to set up a regional semifinal matchup with TABC No. 16 Goliad on Friday at 6 p.m. at Seguin High School's Goldie Harris Gym. The teams were knotted up at 16-all after the first quarter and 23-all at halftime. Marion won the third period 11-8, Palacios forced overtime with a 10-7 edge in the fourth quarter, and each team scored five points in the first extra session.
Samantha Hopper pulled down 19 rebounds to go with six points and four assists. She and Randle each collected three steals. Madison Batey rounded out the scoring with a made free throw. Stacey Radtke contributed 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Randle, Batey, and Alex Leos added six, five, and four rebounds, respectively.
The Marion - Goliad winner will face the winner of Friday's 8 p.m. semifinal between Poth and Odem in Saturday's 3A Region IV championship game at noon, also at Goldie Harris Gym.
