Marion baseball goes 1-2 in abbreviated Devine tourney
(Devine) – The Marion baseball team only managed to play three games in the Devine Tournament last week due to rainfall canceling Saturday’s action, and the Bulldogs came home with a victory and two losses.
Marion defeated Somerset 8-4 and fell to Zapata 7-2 on Thursday before closing the tournament Friday with an 8-6 setback to San Antonio-Brackenridge.
Garrett Corkran hit a home run, a double, and finished 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the win over Somerset. Tayler Mills and Noah Haese each went 2-4, with Mills driving in two and Haese scoring once. Cameron Luensmann went 1-3 with two RBIs. Matthew Dutton and Bobby Hinojosa also drove in runs. Jared Mendez earned the win after giving up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Dutton relieved Mendez to toss a scoreless sixth.
The loss to Zapata saw Tyler Seboldt, Corkran, Mills, Haese, Mendez, and Brandon Stanley each record a hit. Mendez drove in a run, while Haese and Stanley each scored once.
Marion led Brackenridge 5-0 after three innings and 6-3 at the end of the fifth, but the Eagles plated two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to rally for the win. Corkran hit his second home run of the tournament and finished with two RBIs and two runs scored. Seboldt and Haese each drove in a run, while Dutton and Luensmann each collected two hits and scored once. Only four of the eight Brackenridge runs were earned as a result of three Bulldog errors.
Marion (4-3-1) opens the District 27-3A schedule against Stockdale tonight at 7 p.m.
Marion softball wraps up shortened Seguin tourney weekend with 2-2 mark
(Seguin) – The Marion softball team finished with two wins and two losses in the Seguin tournament at Huber Ranch last week before Saturday’s games were called off due to steady rainfall in the area.
The Bulldogs fell to La Vernia 8-0 and defeated Schertz-John Paul II 10-6 on Thursday. Marion followed with 20-0 pasting of Runge and a 17-0 loss to San Diego on Friday.
In the win over John Paul II, Brianna Randle, Madison Moos, and Madelyn Abremeit each drove in two runs, with Moos and Abrameit each going 2-4 and Abrameit scoring twice. Madison Schultze and Ashley Laubach each collected two hits and well, and Laubach drove in a run. Kyleigh Mulanax tripled and scored twice. Moos earned the win in the circle, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and six walks in seven innings.
Madison Ross drove in four runs, while Schultze and Moos each had three RBIs in Friday’s win over Runge. Veronica Gonzalez and Kyleigh Mulanax each drove in a run, with Gonzalez going 2-3 and scoring three times. Caitlyn Krueger and Randle each went 2-4, Krueger scored four runs, and Randle crossed the plate three times. Alexis Long also drove in a run. Toryn Autry recorded the first five outs without giving up a hit in the pitcher’s circle, walking one and striking out two in the process. Schultze worked around a hit and two walks to finish the job and keep Runge scoreless.
The Bulldogs (5-10-1) resume the District 27-3A schedule tonight with a 7 p.m. road game in Luling.
