(San Marcos) - Texas Lutheran split a Sunday doubleheader against Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the Bulldogs taking the late game 8-4 at San Marcos High School. TLU dropped the first game 3-2.
The two games were played at San Marcos High School because of unplayable field conditions at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field. The three-game series was reduced to a two-game series because of the weather.
TLU bounced back from the loss in the first game behind five RBI and three hits from Keaton Boysen. Boysen reached base four times and scored a run.
Colby Schrade delivered three hits and scored three runs, and Thomas Varner also scored three runs.
Dylan Drgac pitched five innings of shutout relief. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. He allowed just two hits. For his effort, Drgac was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Co-Pitcher of the week, sharing the award with Centenary's Kaleb Kirk.
In the early game, MIT hit two solo home runs in the sixth to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Jared Schwait and Austin Filiere each left the yard for the Engineers.
Nathan Malinovsky took the tough-luck loss. He struck out nine and allowed six hits in seven innings of work.
David Hesslink of MIT tossed a complete-game five-hitter to get the win.
MIT moved to 1-1 overall, and TLU now stands at 8-6 overall.
