Seguin softball blanks Alamo Heights
(Seguin) - The Seguin High School softball team only needed five innings to notch a 10-0 run-rule victory over Alamo Heights in District 26-5A on Friday.
Vanessa Garza tossed a one-hitter to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.
After two scoreless innings, the Seguin lineup exploded for seven runs in the third, another in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to activat the 10-run mercy rule. The Matadors finished with 12 hits and capitalized on five Alamo Heights errors.
The Matadors are 2-1 in district play, 9-9 overall. Seguin continues the 26-5A schedule today with a noon road game against Medina Valley in Castroville. The next home game is Thursday at 1 p.m. against Marble Falls.
Navarro baseball splits La Grange tourney games
(La Grange) - The Navarro baseball team's trip to the La Grange Tournament was reduced to a single day and two games due to rain in the area on Friday and Saturday, and the Panthers achieved mixed results with a 13-2 loss to Sealy and a 5-4 win over Columbus on Thursday.
Navarro only managed four hits against Sealy, with Leo Herrera, Dean Wallace, Matthew Maldonado, and Hunter Stephens each recording a single. Maldonado drove in a run, while Herrera and Jake Wright each scored once. The Sealy lineup produced 13 hits in the six-inning run-rule win.
Joe Burch drove in two runs in the win over Columbus. Stephens and Mason McCalip each recorded an RBI. Zach Moore was the winning pitcher, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings.
Navarro's record is 9-2. The Panthers host Concordia Lutheran this Thursday at noon.
Navarro softball earns three shutouts in two days
(San Marcos, Manor) - The Navarro softball team notched two wins and a tie in the San Marcos tournament on Thursday, and followed with an 8-0 blanking of Manor in a non-tournament game on Friday.
The Panthers and Austin-Akins were knotted up 3-3 on Thursday when the game was called due to the time limit. Navarro finished the day with two shutouts, 10-0 over Bishop Lynch and 6-0 over Weimar.
Alyssa Hernandez, Alexis Valdez, and Katie Ricketts each went 1-2 and drove in a run against Akins. Cayli Cowan allowed two earned runs on one hit with four walks and four strikeouts in three innings.
Cowan tossed a three-inning no-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks against Bishop Lynch. Hernandez had a monster game at the plate, going 3-3 with a home run, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Sydnie Booker drove in two, while Lindsey Gresham and Emily Hinkelmann each collected two hits and an RBI.
Cowan and Alexis Valdez combined to no-hit Weimar. Cowan struck out four and walked two in the first two innings, and Valdez recorded two strikeouts while working around a pair of walks to keep the shutout intact in the third. Hernandez, Valdez, and Jaylyn Rodriguez each went 2-2 and drove in two runs, while Cowan went 2-3 and scored once.
Cowan pitched the first two innings and struck out five while giving up a hit and a walk against Manor on Friday. Valdez worked five scoreless relief innings, allowed just one hit, struck out two, and didn't walk a single batter in the process. Bailee Stanzione went 2-4 and drove in four, while Valdez finished 2-3 with one RBI. Cowan and Ashlea Frederick each drove in a run. Gresham went 1-2 with a run scored.
Navarro (11-5-2) heads to Wimberley this Friday for 6 p.m. district game.
Marion baseball goes 1-1 in Blanco tourney games
(Blanco) - The Marion baseball team split two games in the Blanco Tournament on Friday, defeating FEAST Home School 7-2 before falling to Blanco 5-3.
Garrett Corkran went 2-3 with three RBIs and a run scored in the win over FEAST. Brandon Stanley hit two doubles, drove in two runs, and crossed the plate once. Noah Haese singled, Jared Mendez doubled, and each player drove in a run. Tyler Seboldt went 1-3 and scored twice. Corkran earned the complete-game win on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in six innings.
In the loss to Blanco, Matthew Dutton and Tayler Mills each doubled, with Dutton driving in two and Mills producing one RBI. Corkran went 1-3 and scored once.
Marion's record is 6-4-1. The Bulldogs resume the District 27-3A schedule tonight with a 7 p.m. road game in Yoakum.
