Marion softball drops back-to-back district games
(Yoakum, Marion) - The early portion of spring break was less than festive for the Marion High School softball team, as the Bulldogs suffered consecutive District 27-3A losses, 3-2 in Yoakum on Monday and 9-1 to Hallettsville at home on Tuesday.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning of Monday's game. Brianna Randle came home on an error after the Yoakum right fielder dropped a Madison Moos fly ball. Kyleigh Mulanax, who reached on a single and took third on the error, came home on an RBI-groundout by Ashley Laubach.
The bats for both teams were quiet for the next four innings. Yoakum scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Lauren Sternadel doubled in Jordee Payne.
Madelyn Abrameit led off the seventh with a double for Marion and eventually advanced to third on a groundout by Randle, but Yoakum pitcher Lauren Caka induced a grounder to first from Caitlyn Krueger to leave the potential tying run stranded and end the game.
Mulanax went 2-3, but those two singles and Abrameit's doubles were the the Bulldogs' only hits. Moos took the tough-luck loss in the pitcher's circle, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Yoakum scored two unearned runs on three Marion errors.
Hallettsville starting pitcher Rylee Trlicek no-hit the Bulldogs and struck out 13 on Tuesday. The only Marion run scored in the bottom of the third when Mulanax drove in Toryn Autry with a sacrfice.
The Brahmas scored six earned runs and three unearned on six hits with six strikeouts and eight walks against Moos.
Marion is 3-2 in district play, 7-12-1 overall. The Bulldogs are off the rest of the week and continue the 27-3A schedule next Tuesday, March 21 with a 7 p.m. home game against Nixon-Smiley.
Marion baseball falls to Yoakum in extra innings, set to open new stadium Friday
(Yoakum) - In Tuesday night's Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs matchup, the visitors from Marion surrendered a run apiece in the seventh and eighth innings to come up short to Yoakum 4-3 in District 27-3A play.
Marion tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when Garrett Corkran doubled in Cameron Luensmann.
Yoakum reclaimed a 2-1 advantage with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Marion responded with a pair of runs in the sixth to go in front for the first time, 3-2. Matthew Dutton singled in Tayler Mills for the tying run, and Luensmann's RBI-single plated Noah Haese for the lead.
Yoakum scratched out the tying run to force extra innings with help from an error and a passed ball by Marion that allowed the leadoff hitter to reach third. The Yoakum runner came home on an a fielder's choice.
Brandon Stanley reached on an error in top of the eighth for Marion, but he was picked off at first for the second out, and Luensmann groundout ended the frame.
Yoakum scored the winning run on a Marion error in the bottom of the eighth.
Marion finished the night with 10 hits, but left nine runners stranded. Dutton, Luensmann, Haese, and Tyler Seboldt each went 2-4, while Tucker Woods and Corkran each finished 1-4. Dutton, Corkran, and Luensmann each recorded an RBI.
Jared Mendez started on the mound and worked the seven regulation innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and only one walk. Dutton took over for Mendez in the eighth and allowed two hits and a walk before the Marion error allowed Yoakum to score an unearned run for the win.
Marion is 1-1 in district play, 6-5-1 overall. The Bulldogs open their new stadium on the MHS campus Friday with 7 p.m. district game against Hallettsville.
