Seguin junior Vanessa Garza delivers a pitch during Thursday's district loss to Marble Falls.
(Seguin) - The Seguin softball team landed on the short end of a pitcher's duel Tuesday afternoon, falling at home to Marble Falls 1-0 in District 26-5A play.
Seguin's Vanessa Garza and Marble Falls' Logan Hulon dueled through four scoreless innings, but the visiting Mustangs capitilized on an error to score an unearned run in the top of the fifth. The Matadors were unable to scratch out the tying run over the final three frames.
The Seguin lineup, just two days after pounding out 15 hits in an 18-3 win over a Medina Valley team that handed Marble Falls its only district loss, only managed four hits against Hulon.
"We put the bat on the ball, but the off day was putting the bat on the ball with the short game," Seguin head coach John Garcia said. "We just couldn't get a bunt down, we had a chance to score a run that would have tied it up with the suicide, and we can't bunt the ball fair. We work on it and work on it, and we just didn't execute, and it came back to really hurt us."
Garza allowed six scattered hits in seven innings, but the Matadors committed four errors on the afternoon.
"She kept them off balance, and you just take away that one error, she went seven innings with no earned runs, and we still lose 1-0, that's tough to swallow."
Seguin is 3-2 in district play, while Marble Falls, led by former Navarro head coach Tim Richter, improves to 4-1. The Matadors, 10-10 overall, look to bounce back with a road win over Kerrville-Tivy on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
