(Seguin) - The Seguin baseball team dropped its second straight District 26-5A game Thursday afternoon in a 7-2 setback to Alamo Heights at 'Smokey' Joe Williams Field.
The Matadors fell behind 5-0 before stringing runs together in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within three, but the Mules tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh and held Seguin scoreless the rest of the way.
Juan Rodriguez and Robert McCall drove in the Seguin runs. Hayden Haas and Marcos Villamil each scored once, and Villamil finished 2-3 with a double. Camron Gutierrez alsw went 2-3. McCall and Mason Mondin each went 1-2, and Cody Kachmar finished 1-3.
Mason Mondin pitched the first five innings and struck out six while giving up six hits and two walks without allowing a single earned run, but Alamo Heights scored five unearned runs on a flurry of Seguin errors during that span. Joseph De La Cruz relieved Mondin for the sixth and seventh frames, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
All told, the Matadors committed six errors and gave up six unearned runs.
Nathaniel Prete earned the win for Alamo Heights, giving up the two Seguin runs (both earned) on seven hits in five innings.
The Matadors are 1-2 in district play, 4-10 overall. Seguin continues the 26-5A schedule Tuesday with a 7 p.m. road game against Medina Valley in Castroville.
