Experienced nucleus leads Seguin volleyball in 2014
(Seguin) – The Seguin High School volleyball team reports back to campus Monday for the first week of pre-season practice under third-year head coach Kristi Stanley.

The Matadors went 20-21 and missed the playoffs a year ago, but an experienced group of varsity returnees gives Seguin reason to be optimistic about posting a winning record and returning to the post-season in 2014.

Senior middle blockers Sydney Riordan and Mykaeli Franklin are the headliners of that nucleus.  Franklin put away 236 kills during an injury-shortened 2013 season as a junior, and led the team with an average of 2.68 kills per individual game and 28 total blocks.  She also delivered 52 aces, tops among the Matadors’ returning players.  Riordan registered 206 kills and 24 blocks during her junior season.

Leslie Gonzalez (6) and Sydney Riordan (4) are among eight Seguin volleyball players with varsity experience returning to the Matadors for the 2014 season.

Six other players with varsity experience join Riordan and Franklin on the 2014 roster.  That list includes senior Priscila Ornales, and juniors Leslie Gonzales, Miranda Garcia, Cassie Coyle, Sam Coyle, and Winnie Miller.

Gonzales saw time as a defensive specialist and outside hitter as a sophomore in 2013, recording 424 digs, 89 kills, and 27 aces.  Garcia is likely to step into the starting setter’s role in 2014 after sharing time at the position last year with Crystal Luna, who graduated in May.  Garcia put up 229 assists, and also contributed 29 aces and 105 digs as a sophomore.  Sam Coyle totaled 10 kills, 10 digs, and 5.5 blocks, while Cassie Coyle recorded 24 kills, 25 digs, and 9.5 blocks.  Ornales came up with 110 digs and 14 aces, and Miller delivered 14 kills, 13 digs, and 9.5 blocks.

With UIL realignment creating a 6A division and essentially moving all schools up in classification, Seguin will compete in the newly formed District 27-5A this season, along with Boerne-Champion, Floresville, Kerrville-Tivy, Lockhart, Alamo Heights, San Marcos, San Antonio-Kennedy, and San Antonio-Memorial.  Three of the teams who made the playoffs in the Matadors former district (27-4A) – Alamo Heights, Boerne-Champion, and Tivy – will still be district adversaries in 2014, but the other two teams who finished ahead of Seguin in the standings a year ago – Clemens and Buda-Hays – are no longer district opponents.

Seguin has scrimmages at Alamo Heights next Friday at 9 a.m., and at San Antonio-Madison on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8 a.m.  The Matadors open the regular season Tuesday, Aug. 12 with a 6 p.m. road match at Cibolo-Steele.  The team’s complete 2014 schedule appears below.

Wild Game ChiliKnowing where your food came from is rare these days. We often purchase groceries without giving a second thought to the process that went into getting the food. One Pan Nan's Not So Typical Broccoli SoupAll right, it’s still freezing all around the country, so I’m sticking with homemade soup a little while longer because that’s what we want in this weather, right??  Every cook has a broccoli cheese soup recipe — it’s kinda like chili — it’s personal. But here’s a not so typical broccoli cheese soup option with [...]
