The 150 total is the second-largest check-in total of the Danny Padron era. Padron is in his fifth year as head coach of the Bulldogs.

"Not sure of the exact numbers since we had some guys not make it this morning because of some family situations, but overall we were very pleased with how fast things went and how things got done," Padron said.

TLU starts practice at new Bulldog Stadium and at the new George Kieffer Football Practice Field at 8:45 a.m. Thursday.

The 150 players arriving at the TLU campus on Wednesday trail only in number to the 2011 group that totaled 153. Padron and his coaches have collected first-day player numbers of 126, 153, 135, 146 and 150 in their five years in Seguin.

This year's group contains 85 true freshmen, two sophomore transfers, 35 sophomores, 13 juniors and 15 seniors.

"We have a good recruiting class, some good looking young men," said Padron. "Every year we get better in that department. We are getting to that stage right now where we don't get sand kicked in our faces like we used to."

The Bulldogs return seven starters on offense, nine starters on defense and five starting specialists (punter, kicker, deep snapper, two kick returners) along with 46 total lettermen from a 2013 squad that went 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs finished 2013 with the third-ranked total offense in all of NCAA Division III and set new school records for total offense per game, scoring per game, total touchdown passes, and total touchdowns per game.

The Bulldogs averaged 46.1 points per game in 2013 and scored 54 touchdowns in nine games.

TLU scrimmages Blinn College at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 and opens the regular season on Sept. 6 against Sul Ross State University. Both the scrimmage, the season-opener and the remaining four home games will be played in TLU's new on-campus football and track & field facility – Bulldog Stadium.
