(San Antonio) – The Seguin High School volleyball team embarks on a two-month, 16-match journey through the District 27-5A schedule tonight after a 3-3 weekend at the Northeast ISD Tournament in San Antonio.

The Matadors dropped two of their first three matches on Friday at the Blossom Athletic Center, but rebounded to win two of three on Saturday.  All tournament matches were played under the best-of-three format.

Seguin defeated Los Fresnos in two straight games Friday (25-20, 25-19), fell to Steele in two straight (25-13, 25-14), and lost to MacArthur for the second time in three days, this time by a 2-1 final (25-20, 10-25, 25-15).

As has been the case through most of the early season, Sydney Riordan spearheaded the Matadors’ attack at the net in the win over Los Fresnos with 11 kills.  Mykaeli Franklin added six kills, and Abby Cheek totaled four.  Setters Kaylie Koenen and Miranda Garcia put up 14 and 13 assists, respectively, and Garcia sent the team’s only two aces over the net.  Leslie Gonzalez paced Seguin defensively with 23 digs, and Riordan also reached double figures in that department with 12.  Cassie Coyle finished with 2.5 blocks.

In the Friday loss to Steele, Riordan put away seven kills, while Garcia and Koenen each distributed seven assists.  Gonzalez collected 13 digs, and Franklin came up with 1.5 blocks.

The loss to MacArthur saw Cheek lead a balanced attack up front with 10 kills, while Riordan finished with eight and Franklin contributed seven.  Garcia delivered 14 assists, and Koenen set for nine.  Gonzalez totaled 24 digs, and along with Garcia, served for one ace.  Franklin recorded 2.5 blocks.
Leslie Gonzalez and her Seguin teammates head to Boerne-Champion for the team’s first district match tonight.

Riordan paced the Matadors at the net and defensively in Saturday’s setback to Madison, racking up 14 kills and 11 digs.  She was efficient with her swings, compiling a .590 hitting percentage.  Cheek contributed seven kills, and Gonzalez chipped in defensively with 10 digs and at the service line with two aces.  Garcia put up 19 assists, and Koenen added 12.  Cassie Coyle led the team in blocks for the second time during the tournament, finishing with three.

In the Saturday win over Austin-LBJ, Cheek continued her solid tournament play with a team-high seven kills, and Riordan added five.  Garcia set for 11 assists, and Gonzalez totaled 12 digs.  Gonzalez, Riordan, and Cassie Coyle each sent two aces over the net.  Coyle had one block, while Jessie Herbold and Winnie Miller combined for one.

Individual stats from the Matadors’ win over Roosevelt were not available at press time.

After a 3-3 tournament run, Seguin’s season record is 7-9.  The Matadors open the District 27-5A schedule with a road match at Boerne-Champion tonight at 6 p.m.  Seguin takes pause from district play this weekend to host its annual tournament at Goldie Harris and Tom Crump gymnasiums.
