(Boerne) – The Seguin High School volleyball team opened the District 27-5A schedule Tuesday night with a 3-0 road loss at the hands of Boerne-Champion.
The first two games were tightly contested, but the Matadors came up short to the Chargers by finals of 25-22 and 25-21. Seguin was unable to extend the match and avoid the sweep in game three, succumbing to Champion by a 25-19 count.
Abby Cheek led the Matador attack up front with 10 kills, while Sydney Riordan contributed six kills and a team-high two blocks. Jessie Herbold chipped in with 1.5 blocks, Cassie Coyle had a solo block, and Cheek and Mykaeli Franklin each recorded a half-block. Franklin also totaled five kills on the night.
Kaylie Koenen set for 13 assists, and Miranda Garcia added nine assists while serving for two aces. Koenen, Cheek, and Riordan each sent one ace over the net.
Leslie Gonzalez paced Seguin defensively with 15 digs, and Riordan also reached double figures with 11. Cassie Coyle came up with seven digs, and Cheek added six.
The Matadors are 0-1 in district play, 7-10 overall.
Seguin has another opportunity to get plenty of non-district reps in before the 27-5A schedule consumes the rest of the season. The annual Matador Invitational Tournament is today through Saturday at Goldie Harris and Tom Crump Gymnasiums on the SHS campus.
Seguin opens tournament play with three pool-play matches this afternoon. The Matadors face Stockdale at 1 p.m., San Antonio-Stevens at 3 p.m., and Clemens at 5 p.m.
