Seguin boys drop home finale to Dripping Springs, turn focus to bi-district playoffs
(Seguin) – With second place and the No. 2 playoff seed in Distrit 26-5A already secured, the Seguin boys basketball team dropped its regular season finale to Dripping Springs 56-54 Tuesday evening at Goldie Harris Gym.

The Matadors led by three going into the fourth quarter, but the Tigers won the final frame 16-11 to eke out the two-point win. Dripping Springs needed the win to move into a third-place tie with Alamo Heights in the district standings. The Tigers and Mules are both 9-5 in district play and split their head-to-head meetings, so they will have to play a tiebreak game to determine the third and fourth playoff seeds.

The loss gives Seguin a final district record of 10-4 and a 16-13 overall mark heading into the UIL playoffs. The Matadors open the 5A Region IV bracket with a bi-district game against Austin-Lanier on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Hays High School in Buda.  The game will air live on KWED 1580 AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage at 5:50.

Cedric Ward led Seguin offensively against Dripping Springs with a game-high 21 points. Tyler Fricke added 13, Mark Garcia and Trystin Silas seven apiece, Jay Sayles four, and Christian Martinez two.

Richard Milliron scored 19 points to lead Dripping Springs, and Nick Breen finished with 11.

Navarro boys claim share of district title, still have to break tie for playoff seeding
(Gonzales) – The Navarro Panthers are boys basketball co-champions on District 27-4A after blowing out Gonzales 65-40 on the road Tuesday night to wrap up the regular season.

Navarro (19-9) and Wimberley (16-13) both finished with 6-2 district records and split their head-to-head meetings, so the Panthers and Texans will square off in a tiebreak game to determine the No. 1 and No. 2 playoff seeds on Friday at 7 p.m. at New Braunfels  High School.

Mason McCaig led four Navarro players in double figures with a game-high 19 points against Gonzales. Will Eveld added 17, Isaiah Grant 13, and Garrett Weaver 12. Tanner Law, Ben Anzaldua, and Tanner Whitson chipped in with two points apiece.

Navarro broke open a 10-10 tie at the end of the first quarter with a 15-4 run in the second period to take a 25-14 lead into halftime. The Panthers outdistanced the Apaches 20-9 in the third quarter, pushing the margin to 45-23 and effectively putting the game out of reach heading into the fourth period.

Marion boys cruise past Luling, clinch third playoff seed in 27-3A
(Luling) – The Marion boys basketball team secured third place in District 27-3A Tuesday night with a 64-47 road win over Luling in the regular season final for both teams.

The Bulldogs went 9-5 in district play and take a 20-10 overall record into the 3A Region IV playoffs as the No. 3 seed from 27-3A. Marion’s bi-district opponent is Vanderbilt-Industrial, which eliminated the Bulldogs in the second round of the post-season last year.

Marion only led Luling 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, but a 26-7 run in the second period pushed the margin out to 21points, 39-18, by halftime. The Eagles threatened to make things interesting by winning the third quarter 20-11, narrowing the Bulldogs’ lead to 50-38 heading into the fourth, but Marion used a 14-9 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to stave off any thoughts of a Luling rally.

Jacob Wallace barely missed a double-double for Marion, scoring 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Fabian Guerrero added 12 points, and J.D. Raggio contributed 11 points and seven steals. Tyler Bridges finished with eight points, and Jackson Allen totaled five.

The Bulldogs hit 52.3 percent of their field goal attempts and went 19-27 at the free throw line.

Marion and Industrial square off in the same gym as last year’s area round playoff matchup, at Moulton High School on Monday at 7 p.m.  The game will air live on KWED 1580 AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage at 6:45.
