TLU women’s soccer wins SCAC opener, falls to Condordia

TLU goalkeeper Stephanie Barrientos (1) was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after a two-save shutout in Friday’s conference opener against Southwestern.  
 
(Seguin, Austin) – The Texas Lutheran women’s soccer team opened the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule Friday with a 2-0 blanking of Southwestern at Gustafson Field in Seguin before dropping a non-conference match to Concordia Texas, 5-3 in Austin on Sunday.

In Friday’s SCAC match against Southwestern, Sara Gribbon nailed the first shot in the 37th minute, taking the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead going into the half.

TLU stepped up the offensive pressure going into the second half, taking 17 shots. Increasing the pressure certainly paid off for the Bulldogs when Katie Morton scored in the 53rd minute to make it 2-0.

Morton scored off a long pass down the right side from junior midfielder Aubrie Wells. It was Wells' first assist of the season.

The Bulldogs out shot the Pirates 23-9, making nine total shots on goal. Stephanie Barrientos held strong in the goal, making two saves, and was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her effort.

Concordia out-shot the Bulldogs 13-6 in the first period of Sunday’s match. Kayla Carlove for CTX scored the first two goals in the first 7 minutes of play. Raquel Morris for TLU reciprocated with an unassisted goal off the goalie save in the 9th minute.

Pamela Lasprilla sunk a goal into the far right side off a corner kick, bringing the score to 3-1 CTX. Tanya Prazelini nailed the next two goals for TLU in the 31st (30:26) and 38th (37:33) minutes of play, both assisted by Sara Gribbon.

Seconds later (37:55) Kaycee Moore scored the game-winning goal for the Tornados. Carlove made
an extra insurance goal with 2 minutes left in the half.

No other goals were made in the second half. Mikaela Gilbert made two saves in the first half, and Stephanie Barrientos contributed two more saves in the second.

TLU soccer squads head to Shreveport, LA next to face Centenary College on Friday, Sept.15. The women's game kicksoff at 5 p.m.and will be followed by the men's match at 7 p.m.
