(Tyler) – The Texas Lutheran volleyball team earned two wins against two losses last Friday and Saturday at the Patriot Classic, hosted by the University of Texas at Tyler.
TLU dropped a four-set match to University of Texas at Dallas and secured a four-setter win over Hardin-Simmons to open the event on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs lost their first match of the day to UT-Dallas by a count of 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 12-25. Makenzie Griffin led TLU in kills. She posted 12 kills, and Bryten Mitchan added 11.
Setters Kionasina Nu'u and Jaci Chambers both tallied 17 assists, respectively. Cailey Young had one serving ace for the Bulldogs.
In the late match, TLU defeated HSU 25-22, 26-24, 13-25, and 25-12 as Griffin again led the squad in kills with 12. Hannah Mikelonis registered nine kills.
Chambers stepped into the libero position and picked up a total of 16 digs and served one ace for the Bulldogs.
Saturday, Texas Lutheran defeated University of Texas at Tyler and suffered a loss to University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
TLU had a three-game sweep against UT-Tyler 25-18, 25-22, 25-18. Makenzie Griffin hit a season high .467 with 16 kills. Brooke Smith and Jaci Chambers both controlled the back row picking up 13 digs each.
Kionasina Nu'u registered 18 assists and served two aces for the Bulldogs, and Remy Corbin added 14 assists.
The Bulldogs fell in the late match to UMHB in three games 21-25, 16-25, 17-25. Bryten Mitchan and Griffin both had nine kills, respectively. Nu'u contributed 12 assists for TLU.
Play continues for TLU this Saturday in San Antonio at the Trinity Invitational. The Bulldogs face Hardin-Simmons University at 2 p.m. and East Texas Baptist University at 5 p.m.
