(Belton) - No. 1-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor limited Texas Lutheran to 150 total yards and forced five turnovers in a 50-7 win over the Bulldogs, Saturday in UMHB's Crusader Stadium.
In the Bulldogs' first encounter with a No. 1-ranked team in its NCAA Division III era, TLU was hurt by two early turnovers - an interception and a fumble - that led to 10 quick UMHB points. In total, The Cru intercepted three passes and collected two fumbles in the home victory.
The Crusaders, the defending national champions of NCAA DIII, improved to 3-0 overall and to 2-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
TLU, coming off last week's 37-0 victory against Belhaven (Miss.), dropped to 1-2 overall and to 1-1 in the ASC.
UMHB won for the 18th straight time against TLU. The Bulldogs' lone win over The Cru came in 1999.
TLU is back in the ASC after four seasons in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. TLU played in the ASC from 1998 to 2012. All other TLU sports remain in the SCAC.
The Cru led 40-0 after three quarters. Into the fourth, TLU had 22 rushes for 23 yards and 76 total yards of offense.
The Bulldogs broke the shutout with a five-yard run from Austin Mathews with 27 seconds to play in the game.
Mathews' touchdown run was only the second touchdown allowed by the UMHB defense this year.
Kedrick Ward, TLU's sophomore cornerback, led TLU with nine total tackles. Austin St. Julien, a freshman cornerback, had eight tackles, and junior linebacker Joshua Head also registered eight tackles.
Cru receiver Jonel Reed had seven catches for 132 yards and a 24-yard TD reception. The Cru gained 482 total yards on 69 plays.
Markeith Miller rushed for 62 yards on 13 carries and had scoring runs of two and 27 yards.
