(Tyler) - Texas Lutheran freshman tennis player Mary Eby (Rockport/Rockport-Fulton) won five matches and played in the "C" draw finals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional Championships, contested Friday through Sunday in Tyler, Texas.

Eby defeated players from Mary Hardin-Baylor, LeTourneau, Schreiner, Howard Payne and Concordia Texas before falling in the draw final against Rachel Maloy of UT Tyler.

"I was very proud of Mary's effort over the three days, but especially on the final day," said Michael Hunt, TLU's head coach for women's and men's tennis. "To play six matches in three days is really tough. It wasn't until the very last game that I thought she was gassed. Her effort was great, and she fought so hard."

TLU sophomore Madison Starr (Lake Jackson/Brazosport Christian) won three matches in the "C" draw. She defeated players from Hendrix College (Ark.), McMurry and Austin College.

"Madison was impressive in winning three matches, and I was proud of Alli (McLain) for competing on an injured ankle," said Hunt. "She had not played a competitive singles point this fall. So for her to compete that way was impressive."

McLain, a senior from Rockport (Rockport-Fulton), played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for TLU last season. McLain, junior Madison Dyer (Marble Falls/Marble Falls) and junior transfer M.P. Hubert played in the "A" draw.

Hubert (Riviera (Texas)/Washington College (Md.)) picked up an "A" consolation draw victory over Emily Moeller of Southwestern.

"Overall, we competed really well," said Hunt. "Madison Dyer played well in 'A' draw. She dropped a tough three-setter. We just needed to get as many matches in as we could. I wish we could have gotten more doubles matches in than we did. Our doubles still needs a lot of work. This is a tough tournament to get that work in, without a back draw for doubles."

"We've got a good mix on this team of experience and youth, and I think that our young players really showed that they want to be in the mix."

The fall season is complete for the TLU Women.

The TLU Men play in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships main draws this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Trinity Univer
