(Georgetown) – The Texas Lutheran volleyball team opened the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a 3-0 sweep of Schreiner on Friday at the Group A Divisional in Georgetown, but dropped a pair of matches to nationally ranked opponents on Saturday, falling to No. 5 Trinity and No. Southwestern in four sets apiece.
In Friday’s win over Schreiner, Bryten Mitchan and Hannah Mikelonis each tallied 12 kills. Cailey Young contributed seven.
As a team, TLU hit .406, .312, and a .333 in games one, two and three, ranking up a total of 43 kills overall. The Bulldogs shut down Schreiner offense making nine total blocks during the match.
Defensive specialists Jaci Chambers and Mathis Popelsky handled to back half of the court picking up eight and nine digs, respectively. Chambers and Popelsky also tallied two serving aces each for the Bulldogs.
Saturday, TLU fell to No. 5 Trinity 25-14, 25-20, 17-25, 26-24 and to No. 2 Southwestern University 25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 23-25, and 15-10.
The 1-2 SCAC opening weekend drops the Bulldogs to 7-7 overall.
Makenzie Griffin led the Bulldogs in kills having 14 in the Trinity match and 18 against Southwestern. Hannah Mikelonis was a close second tallying 17 in game one and 14 in game two.
Cailey Young tallied two solo blocks and an additional five block assists in both matches combined. Griffin registered the only solo block for TLU in the match against Southwestern.
Jaci Chambers picked up a whopping 52 digs (25 against TU and 27 against SU). and freshmen Kelly Jurden registered 23 (12 versus TU and 11 versus SU). Senior Mathis Popelsky added 19 digs in the match against SU and nine against TU.
Jurden contributed 39 total assists for the two matches, and Kionasina Nu'u added 52 for the Bulldogs.
SCAC play continues as TLU hosts the Cross-Divisional Tournament this Saturday and Sunday. The Bulldogs take on Centenary College at 12:30 p.m. and University of Dallas at 5 p.m. on Susan Duke Court day one of the tournament.
